Fix for Storage Problem on Galaxy S4 Could Come from Samsung

Samsung will look into a way to give Samsung Galaxy S4 more storage for apps and games on their new device after a BBC report on the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 appeared on the BBC’s Watchdog program where the show talked about the limited storage space users have with the 16GB model of the Galaxy S4. In a statement regarding the issue Samsung said it is “reviewing the possibility to secure more memory space through further software optimisation.”

The 16GB model of the Samsung Galaxy S4 only gives users access to about 9GB of storage space according to the BBC report, though carrier-branded models in the U.S. may have less user-accessible storage. Previously Samsung said it needed that space to pack in all the new features of the flagship phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 does have a microSD card slot so users can store their music, videos and photos on a microSD card, but that doesn’t solve the problem for many users.

Users can only store apps on the internal storage of the phone, and some of those apps are fairly large. Just a few graphically intense games like Real Racing 3 and ShadowGun can easily eat up storage on the phone. Other apps like Twitter clients and the Kindle app don’t take up as much room, but a lot of small apps can add up quickly.

There is a 32GB model of the Galaxy S4, but AT&T is the only U.S. carrier that offers the phone. Samsung also announced a 64GB model of the phone, but that model is so hard to find it’s almost a myth.

At Google I/O, Google announced the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition (or Google Edition). The phone still has 16GB of storage, but runs stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which means it should have fewer useless features that just take up space. Perhaps that model will offer users more storage space when it comes out in June.
