Smartphone Wars: Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Versus Nokia Lumia 1020

Here we are, matching up these 2 smartphones. Just take a look. These photography big shots are almost more camera than smartphone.

With their focus on photography, Nokia's Lumia 1020 and Samsung's Galaxy S4 Zoom are the smartphone industry's camera big shots.
While both strive for smartphone imaging prowess, these two devices are really very different. It's best to think of the Lumia 1020 as a smartphone with a good camera, and of the S4 Zoom as a point-and-shoot that can make calls.
For now, I match up the phones' specs and lay out some strengths of each. I'll come back and flesh this out with many more comparisons -- including image quality -- after fully testing the Zoom. The Lumia 1020, for its part, has been fully reviewed.
Camera resolution
The Lumia 1020 has a 41-megapixel resolution, which is a bit of a misnomer because photos resolve to 5 megapixels by default. You can peel off the full resolution images manually, through the computer.
Samsung's camera grabs 16-megapixel shots, but its sensor is smaller than on the Lumia 1020. It is easier, however, to get to the full-resolution output. We'll need to wait on a photo quality shootout to decide which ones takes the better photos.

Zoom in on it
The Zoom has all the advantage with a 10x optical zoom that should handily smash the Lumia 1020's 3x digital zoom.
At least that's what we expect for a physical zooming lens. As a general rule of thumb, optical zoom produces higher-quality images than digital zoom, among other things. Of course, we won't know for sure until the test results come in. Stay tuned!
Settings and controls
Apart from high-resolution images and the larger sensor size, Nokia's manual camera controls are a high point. There aren't any preset modes in the default Nokia Pro Cam app, which isn't great (you have to switch camera apps or add lenses,) and the camera doesn't handle close-ups well in automatic settings. However, the sliding controls are convenient for creative snaps.

The Complete Samsung Galaxy S4 Family

With the introduction a new range of S4-linked devices to Samsung's lineup, consumers are likely to get lost. However, this isn't as bad as it sounds. For one, the chaebol is leveraging on its positive S4 branding, which may help it sell a lot more phones than it otherwise would.
More importantly, it shows that the electronics giant is capable of sticking to the same design aesthetics for its products. This come with the risk of everything looking too similar, which can be a problem. We wonder if Samsung employees themselves have trouble identifying the handsets without close examination if they were all placed together.
The launch of yesterday's S4 Zoom means Samsung now has five S4 handsets. Here's a quick cheat sheet showing the key differences of between them.

The flagship smartphone comes with all the bells and whistles expected of Samsung's top handset. We mentioned in our review that there are likely some software features you'll probably never use, but the hardware and build of the handset is top notch, despite its plastic chassis.
If you must get Samsung's best, the S4 (available now) is really the smartphone of choice. But those seeking alternatives should look below.
Key features: It's the top end handset from Samsung, and you get all the software features Samsung has developed inside this handset.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

Announced for a Q3 launch, the S4 Active seems aimed at those who lead sporty lifestyles (or really clumsy people). It's water- and dust-resistant, though not drop-proof. For those worried about accidental dunks, the phone can be submerged to a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes.
Specs-wise, it's pretty similar to the S4, such as a quad-core 1.9GHz processor, but uses a TFT panel (rather than AMOLED) for its 5-inch full-HD display, and comes with an 8-megapixel shooter with software enhancements for taking better pictures underwater.
Key features: You never have to worry about getting your phone waterlogged, and you get almost all of the benefits of Samsung's flagship S4.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition

Available only in the US and meant really for developers, the S4 Google Edition uses the same hardware as the original S4, but runs stock Android instead of Samsung's TouchWiz. This means OS updates will come much faster, but you lose out on the software enhancements that Samsung has put into its TouchWiz UI.
Key features: Fast Android updates.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Like the S3 Mini, the smaller version of the S4 is meant for markets in Asia and Europe. It is expected to debut at a much more affordable price and features a 4.3-inch display and packs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor instead.
Other downsized features include an 8-megapixel camera instead of the S4's 13 as well as a smaller 1,900mAh battery. It ships with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and may come with LTE depending on the market.
Key features: You'll get the S4 design in a compact form factor at a cheaper price.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

Remember last year's Samsung Galaxy Camera? it's now back in the form of the S4 Zoom--and this time, it can make phone calls. The LTE-capable S4 Zoom comes with 16-megapixel shooter with 10x optical zoom and built-in optical image stabilization (OIS), and runs on Android 4.2.
A dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz powers the Zoom, and you'll be able to view the shots you've taken with the 'phomera' on its 4.3-inch screen. Due in Q3, the phone isn't likely to be cheap, and we expect components such as the 10x optics and sensor will bump up the cost.
Key features: The 10x optical zoom and larger sensor should let you take much better pictures compared with normal smartphones. And you can make phone calls on this camera, too.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Launched with 16-Megapixel Hybrid, 10x Optical Zoom

Samsung has officially revealed the Galaxy S4 Zoom, bulking out its Galaxy S 4 flagship with a 16-megapixel sensor, a 10x optical zoom, and a Xenon flash. The new smartphone-camera hybrid is part of the Korean company’s mission to make “an industry-leading smartphone, and a high-end compact camera” in one device, which started with the original Galaxy Camera.
On the phone side, there’s a choice of 3G HSPA+ and LTE versions depending on market, all powered by a 1.5GHz dualcore processor (which Samsung says will vary, again depending on market). There’s a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display – covered with a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 – along with 8GB of internal storage (of which around 5GB is user-available) and 1.5GB of RAM, with a microSD card slot.
Connectivity includes WiFi a/b/g/n (5GHz) as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC; you also get A-GPS and GLONASS, an accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor, gyroscope, and light sensor. The battery is a 2,330 mAh pack, though Samsung isn’t saying how long it’ll last.
That’s a big question, too, as the Galaxy S4 Zoom packs some pretty impressive camera features. There’s a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with optical image stabilization and a 24-240mm 10x optical zoom, with an F3.1-F6.3 lens. On the front, there’s a 1.9-megapixel camera for video calls.
ISO 100-3200 is supported, and up to 4fps burst photography with autofocus. There’s a Xenon flash, rather than the usual LED, and support for recording up to 1080p30 HD video.
On the software side, as well as TouchWiz on top of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as we’re familiar with from other Galaxy S4 series phones, there are various new camera-specific features. The Smart Mode from the Galaxy Camera and Samsung’s standalone point-and-shoots is carried across, as are things like Drama Shot and Action Freeze. There’s also Photo Suggest, which uses online libraries of photos in common places to suggest the best location and angle.
There’s also Samsung Zoom Ring, which, if twisted when in a call, automatically kicks into camera mode, lets you snap a photo, and then send it via MMS to whoever you’re talking to. It’s also used to control the optical zoom.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom will go on sale this summer, though the company is yet to confirm pricing.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom product photo showed up!

The first official photo of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has surfaced courtesy of Sammobile. In addition, the Camera phone has appeared in live photos, showing its dedicated camera button from up close.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom (CM-101) looks to be based on the Galaxy S4 mini and is going to be able to place calls. In contrast, the Galaxy Camera wasn't able to make calls due to its locked baseband radio.
Built around a 4.3" qHD Super AMOLED display, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is rumored to pack a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and run Android 4.2.2. The main attraction is going to be the 16MP camera at the back, which is purported to feature 10x optical zoom.
Internal memory is suggested to be 8GB, and is going to be expandable with up to 64GB microSD card. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and GPS.
The right side of the device houses the lock/unlock button, volume rocker and shutter button.

Samsung officially announced its London event on June 20, and the Galaxy S4 Zoom is expected to be one of the stars at the show.
